UK Envoy Says Royal Visit to US Aims to Boost Ties

(MENAFN) The UK’s ambassador to the United States has described the upcoming royal visit as an opportunity to “renew and revitalize a unique friendship” between the two countries, even as security concerns remain high in Washington.

Christian Turner said the planned four-day state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla is expected to proceed largely as scheduled following recent discussions between the UK prime minister and US president.

The US president said King Charles will “be very safe” during his stay, adding in comments on television that the White House area is “really safe”. He added, “I think it’s great, he’ll be very safe… this area of not very many acres is really safe.”

The visit is set to begin later on Monday, with the royal couple due to be welcomed by the US president and the first lady.

Security has been under closer review following a recent incident in Washington in which a gunman disrupted a major event attended by the US president, prompting renewed scrutiny of protective measures.

Despite this, officials on both sides have signaled that preparations for the royal trip remain on track.

The visit comes amid broader political tensions between the two allies, including disagreements over international policy positions. Some political figures have also voiced criticism of the timing and optics of the visit.

A Liberal Democrat leader called for the trip to be cancelled, describing the US president as an “unreliable” ally.

Meanwhile, a Green Party co-leader said he “feels sorry” for the king and suggested the UK should take “a sterner line.”

Even with these criticisms, diplomatic officials continue to frame the visit as an important moment to reinforce longstanding bilateral relations.
